Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT)

This is a convenient and easy-to-use test that you complete in the comfort of your own bed. The HSAT device is a compact, portable monitor that records key data while you sleep, including your breathing patterns, heart rate, and oxygen levels. We often recommend this test as the first step for patients suspected of having obstructive sleep apnea. It’s a simple and effective way to get an accurate diagnosis without having to spend the night in a lab.

  • Key benefit: You get an accurate, physician-supervised diagnosis in the comfort of your own home.

In-Lab Polysomnography (PSG)

Also known as an in-lab sleep study, polysomnography is the most comprehensive sleep test available. If your symptoms are complex or a home test isn’t sufficient, we may recommend an overnight stay at a sleep lab. During this test, you’ll be monitored by a skilled sleep technician who will connect sensors to your body to record an extensive range of data, including:

  • Brain waves: To identify different sleep stages.
  • Breathing and oxygen levels: To detect sleep apnea and other breathing issues.
  • Heart rhythm: To check for abnormalities.
  • Leg and arm movements: To identify conditions like Restless Legs Syndrome.

The detailed information gathered during a PSG provides the most complete picture of your sleep patterns, allowing for a precise diagnosis.

  • Key benefit: It’s the gold standard for diagnosing a wide range of sleep disorders and provides the most comprehensive data.

MSLT & MWT (Daytime Tests)

These specialized tests are used to diagnose specific daytime sleepiness issues.

  • Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT): The MSLT measures how quickly you fall asleep during the day. It is the definitive test for diagnosing narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. The test consists of several scheduled naps throughout the day, and it helps determine the severity of your daytime sleepiness.
  • Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT): The MWT measures your ability to stay awake during the day. This test is often required for individuals in safety-sensitive professions, such as commercial truck drivers or pilots, to assess their capacity to remain alert.
  • Key benefit: These tests provide crucial insights into the cause and severity of excessive daytime sleepiness.

Actigraphy

Actigraphy is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses a small, watch-like device worn on the wrist. It’s an excellent option for patients who need long-term monitoring of their sleep patterns. The device continuously records your movement, which allows us to estimate when you are asleep versus awake over several days or weeks. This is especially valuable for diagnosing and managing circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, such as jet lag or shift work disorder, as it helps us identify your natural sleep and wake cycle.

  • Key benefit: It provides a detailed, long-term look at your sleep-wake schedule in your natural environment.
