A bronchoscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to see inside your airways. It is a key diagnostic tool used to investigate a persistent cough, infections, or abnormal findings on a chest scan. At Premier Lung & Sleep Institute, our specialists perform bronchoscopy with a focus on patient safety and comfort.

What is a Bronchoscopy?

A bronchoscopy uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera (bronchoscope) that’s passed through your nose or mouth and into your airways. This allows the doctor to visually inspect the lungs and, if necessary, collect small tissue samples (biopsies), remove mucus plugs, or treat other issues. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis using numbing medicine and light sedation.

Why Is a Bronchoscopy Performed?

Your doctor may recommend a bronchoscopy to:

  • Investigate a chronic cough or recurrent infections.
  • Evaluate an abnormal finding on a chest X-ray or CT scan.
  • Obtain a biopsy from a lung nodule or enlarged lymph nodes.
  • Identify the cause of airway bleeding.

Preparing for Your Procedure

You will receive specific instructions, but generally, you’ll need to fast for several hours before the procedure if sedation is planned. Be sure to provide an up-to-date medication list, especially if you take blood thinners or diabetes medications.

What to Expect

The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes. You may experience a feeling of pressure or a temporary sore throat afterward, but most patients go home the same day. We provide a written after-care plan and monitor you closely.

Risks and Safety

Bronchoscopy is a generally safe procedure with small risks, including a mild sore throat, a temporary low-grade fever, or, rarely, bleeding or a collapsed lung. Our team will continuously monitor you to ensure your safety and provide comprehensive after-care instructions.
